Curiosities – Antique Pill Silverer

Published by

It’s exciting to find something new you have never seen before. We have stumbled upon this interesting little antique treen – what is this footed wooden ball?

Did you know it is an old pill silverer?

It is made of rare Karelian birch wood and it has been used by apothecaries to finish the pills with a silver or gold coating!
It may be split in two to reveal a smooth inner surface.

The pills were coated with syrup then placed inside along with gold or silver leaf and shaken until uniformly coated to give the pills an ‘expensive’ look. These were generally used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
