What is the difference between USSR, Soviet Union and Russia?

USSR = Soviet Union = Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
now Russia = Russian Federation
in times of USSR Russia = RSFSR = Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and was part of USSR
before USSR Russia = Russian Empire

Russia is the modern country name. It’s like France or Spain. The name of the country. Soviet Union and USSR is the same thing. (USSR = Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) That’s history. It was a union of 15 Socialist (note Not Communist) republics:

Russia
Georgia
Ukraine
Moldova
Belarus
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan
Turkmenistan
Kyrgyzstan
Tajikistan
Latvia
Lithuania
Estonia

And that union was called USSR.
It broke up about 20 years ago and now all these nations run independently. One of those nations is Russia (Russian Federation).

There is a story behind

Soviet era Officer bag

I bought this original Soviet Officer Leather Bag  from our local Estonian twice a year held old cars and antique fair. In Russian it’s called “Planshet” – map-case and it was used for carryng different documents, pens and other essentials needed in the army. Seller told me the hole story of different bags used during the WWII.

For example this particular bag has a handle and long shoulder strap and it was used in infantry. But if this kind of bag has only one short handle it was used in air forces attached to a belt.

USSR breaks down

ussr breaks down

In December of 1991 the Soviet Union (the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or U.S.S.R.) was officially dissolved.  From it emerged Russia (the Russian Federation) and a number of independent countries in Central Asia and Eastern Europe (shown in greens in the map).  In addition the countries of Eastern Europe were freed from Soviet military domination (shown in yellows in the map).  In Central Asia 8 new (or newly independent) countries emerged:  Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.  In Eastern Europe the 6 new (or restored) countries are Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.  The Eastern European countries freed from Soviet domination but not part of the U.S.S.R. are Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania and Yugoslavia.
East Germany has reunited with West Germany.  Czechoslovakia has split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.  Yugoslavia disintegrated violently creating Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia and most recently Kosovo; leaving the remainder as Serbia.  Russia supports the separatist movements of Transnistria in Moldova and Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia but these have no international recognition.

My grandpa was a sailor

My Grandpa in 1930

My grandpa is about 18 in this picture taken in 1930. He is just in the beginning of his sailor career in many years in the most various seas over the world. He sails on different sailing ships and steamships until the WWII.

sailing ship

First, he is just a ship’s boy, then a stoker and finally a cook. He is in the sea near the Britain coast when WWII begins and the ship gets hit by a projectile, but luckily he stays alive when 9 people died.

He was married over 50 years and my grandparents lived both over the 85 years old. My grandpa died in 1999 and grandma said in the hospital, she does not want to live anymore and she died in the same year. They are now together in the small and beautiful cemetery in their home village.

Polka dots

Polka dot tea setDo you remember the polka dot fascination? Are you noticed how the pattern is popping up again everywhere lately?

Here in Estonia each and every family had in 70-s some kind of polka dot tea of coffee set. They were awfully popular.

1950 cat eyeglassesFound those in our local recycling shop. I remember my grandma was visiting some relatives in Sweden in 60-s and when she came back he had such glasses as a modern gift 🙂
